Why do we
call ourselves 'People of The Way'
People of the Way
was the title given to the early Christians.
An essential part of The Way was a commitment to
the radical nonviolence of Jesus. Christians were
not allowed to carry arms until the 3rd Century.
"Jesus' resistance to violence begins on the
first page of the Gospel and continues through to
the end" (Nancy Schreck)
Jesus displayed a commitment to right
relationships that are counter cultural to
dominant social values.
Instead of using violence to secure and maintain
power Jesus tells us, "love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you" (Mt5:44)
People of The Way is inspired by the gospel, and
the lives of many who have lived a Spirituality
of active nonviolence.
